White crystalline deposit
Saltpeter forms white or grayish crystals on the wall surface. These crystals have a powdery or downy appearance, sometimes shiny. They flake off easily when scratched.
Location on the lower part
Saltpeter typically appears between 0 and 1.50 m from the ground, where rising damp is most active. If it is present higher up, it is probably another cause (condensation, infiltration).
Blistering paint and plaster
As saltpeter crystals form, they lift the coatings. The paint blisters, the plaster crumbles, the wallpaper peels off. This is the sign that salts are rising and crystallizing beneath the surface.
Porous and crumbly walls
Over time, saltpeter disintegrates materials (stone, brick, mortar). The wall becomes porous, the joints crumble, the surface is grainy to the touch.
Cyclic appearance
Saltpeter appears and disappears depending on the season. It is more visible in winter (heating = evaporation = crystallization) and seems to fade in summer. But it never truly disappears without treatment.

What to Do if You Have Saltpeter?
1. Get a professional diagnostic
Saltpeter is a symptom of rising damp. A professional can measure the humidity level in the walls (pin-type hygrometer) and identify the extent of the problem. Cost: 150-300€ or free via our partners.
2. Treat the cause by injection
