Humidity Smell: 5 Quick Solutions to Eliminate It
A musty or stuffy smell in your home? It's not just a matter of comfort: it's often a sign of a humidity problem to be treated. Here are 5 quick solutions to eliminate these unpleasant smells.
Important: treat the cause, not just the smell
Humidity smells are caused by microbial VOCs (volatile organic compounds) emitted by molds and bacteria. INSERM has identified more than 800 of these compounds. Masking the smell without treating the source will not solve the problem and can be dangerous for your health.
The 5 Quick Solutions
Aerate travelly
The first thing to do: open windows wide for 15 to 20 minutes, even in winter. Create a draft by opening opposite windows to completely renew the air in the room.
Use baking soda
Baking soda is an excellent natural odor absorber. Place small bowls filled with baking soda in the affected areas. You can also sprinkle it on carpets and fabrics, let it sit for several hours, then vacuum.
Clean with white vinegar
White vinegar is a natural antifungal effective against the molds responsible for odors. Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water, then clean the affected surfaces (walls, floors, furniture). The vinegar smell disappears as it dries.
Install an absorber or dehumidifier
To sustainably reduce humidity and associated smells, use a humidity absorber (for small spaces) or an electric dehumidifier (for rooms). Maintain the humidity level between 40% and 60%.
Use essential oils
Certain essential oils (tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender) have antifungal and deodorizing properties. Diffuse them in the room or add a few drops to your cleaning water. Warning: does not mask the problem, to be used as a supplement.
When to Call a Professional?
The solutions above are effective for light and occasional humidity problems. However, if the smell persists despite your efforts, there is probably a deeper problem to be treated:
Consult if:
- • The smell returns despite ventilation and cleaning
- • You see mold traces on the walls
- • The walls are damp to the touch
- • You or your loved ones have symptoms (cough, allergies)
