How to Recognize Saltpeter? 5 Signs

Saltpeter (potassium nitrate) is a white deposit characteristic of damp walls. Here is how to identify it for sure and differentiate it from other problems.

    The 5 Signs of Saltpeter

    1

    White crystalline deposit

Saltpeter forms white or grayish crystals on the wall surface. These crystals have a powdery or downy appearance, sometimes shiny. They flake off easily when scratched.

    2

    Location on the lower part

Saltpeter typically appears between 0 and 1.50 m from the ground, where rising damp is most active. If it is present higher up, it is probably another cause (condensation, infiltration).

    3

    Blistering paint and plaster

As saltpeter crystals form, they lift the coatings. The paint blisters, the plaster crumbles, the wallpaper peels off. This is the sign that salts are rising and crystallizing beneath the surface.

    4

    Porous and crumbly walls

Over time, saltpeter disintegrates materials (stone, brick, mortar). The wall becomes porous, the joints crumble, the surface is grainy to the touch.

    5

    Cyclic appearance

Saltpeter appears and disappears depending on the season. It is more visible in winter (heating = evaporation = crystallization) and seems to fade in summer. But it never truly disappears without treatment.

    Real Case Study

Village house - Vendée, 1890 limestone

    Problem

Saltpeter visible over 12 linear meters, peeling paint, persistent odor

    Diagnostic

Rising damp due to lack of waterproof barrier + unventilated cellar

    Solution

Hydrophobic resin injection + drainage + lime plaster

    Detailed budget

    Injection: 120€/ml i.e. 1,440€ • Drainage: 2,800€ • Lime plaster: 1,200€

    Result

Disappearance of saltpeter in 6 months, healthy walls after 1 year

    Added value

Property value: +8% after work (notary estimate)

What to Do if You Have Saltpeter?

    1. Get a professional diagnostic

Saltpeter is a symptom of rising damp. A professional can measure the humidity level in the walls (pin-type hygrometer) and identify the extent of the problem. Cost: 150-300€ or free via our partners.

    2. Treat the cause by injection

Hydrophobic resin injection at the base of the wall is the most effective treatment (85% success according to CEREMA). It creates a waterproof barrier that stops rising damp. Price: 100-150€/linear meter.

    3. Clean and restore

Once the treatment is performed and the wall has dried (6-12 months), brush off the saltpeter, apply an anti-saltpeter product and re-apply lime plaster (breathable). Plaster budget: 40-80€/m².

    What NOT to do

    • • Paint over it (saltpeter will return and peel the paint off)
    • • Apply a waterproof plaster (humidity will be trapped in the wall)
    • • Ignore the problem (damage will worsen)
    • • Increase the heating (accelerates evaporation and crystallization)
